1999 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
My third bottle this year and I think I should have saved one just to see what happens in 5+ years with the wine. Oh well, I’d rather drink them on the way up than the way down. This is a big, powerful and fairly structured wine (more so than the previous bottles) and shows plum and fig fruit, barbecue, raw meat and roasted spice and incense. Medium to full bodied, there still some power to this wine and it’s actually kind of dense and tight. This firms up with ample tannins on the finish but is far from unapproachable and has solid fruit. (89+ pts.)
