The monumental 2005 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is very dark, dense and concentrated with awesome aromatics of raspberry and blackberry fruit, graphite, licorice and earth. The palate is full bodied, balanced and with a fantastic, mouth coating texture and a monster finish. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre, 2% various. The 2005 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes was drank over two days and is simply a stunning wine that is the equal of anything produced in this vintage (IMHO). The color is an inky black and is completely opaque. The nose shows amazingly levels of rich fruit and at this point, the depth and richness of the fruit reminds me of a Foley Claret.... crazy I know but it's simply that decadent... Black currant, blackberry, graphite, licorice and mineral notes make up the bulk of the aromas and while this is aged mostly in old foudres (it does see some new barrique), the richness gives this a decidedly modern feel. With air this picks up a slightly meaty, earthy note. The palate is full bodied with massive concentration, perfect balance and a gorgeous, weighty texture. The fruit is sweet and leads into a long finish. Wow, the 2005 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is simply amazing, massive and concentrated juice. Just a stunningly rich and dark nose of black currant, black cherry, earth, licorice and graphite. With air this picks up some tar and hot asphalt notes. The palate is full bodied, precise and powerful with perfect balance, massive structure, a gorgeous texture and a very long finish.
