The 2006 Vieilles Vignes however, lags its ’07 counterpart in aromatics only. Where the ’07 is fresh and focused, the ’06 is just slightly more rustic and heavy, showing deep black cherry, raspberry, licorice and garrigue. The palate is every bit as good as the ’07 and if anything, offers a touch more integration and finesse at this point. It’s also interesting to note that Sophie prefers her ’06 Vieilles Vignes to the ’07 at this point. Either way, this is a stunning wine that will drink for 20+ years.

A blockbuster, the 2006 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blend of primarily very old vine Grenache from 3 vineyards - Gallimardes, Charbonnieres and Esqueirrons. Spend 18 months in large Foudres, the wine exhibits amazing aromatics of licorice soaked raspberries, toasted spices, flowers and earthy, mineral undertones. The palate doesn’t lose a beat to the nose and delivers with full body, perfectly ripe fruit, an awesome texture and a textured, very long finish. One of the top ‘06s, this should have no problem lasting over the next two decades.

A heady, blockbuster of a wine from 50 to 100 year old vines, the 2006 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes possesses perfumed and intense aromatics of kirsch, cassis, liquefied stems, flowers and licorice. This leads into a full bodied palate that displays seriously ripe, lush and glycerol infused fruit, beautiful balance, a savory texture and solid structure that comes out on the long finish. A stunning example of old vine grenache that should drink beautifully over the next 20 years!
