Château de Beaucastel

The Beaucastel family has been living in Courthezon since the sixteenth century. In 1909, Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel was passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin.

Today, the domaine is owned and operated by Jean Pierre and Francois and is composed of 70 hectares located in the northern part of the region. Each grape variety is fermented separately and then blended before aging in very large, 1000 gallon oak barrels for 12 months. Interestingly, after sorting, the grapes (must) are flash heated to 80 degrees Celsius (176 F) before beginning the maceration. The reasoning behind this is to improve extraction from the skins for color and to slow fermentation. The grapes are destemmed (not sure if partial or completely.)

Beaucastel is unique due to its extremely high percentage of Mourvedre compared to other primarily grenache based wines of the region. Typical production is anywhere from 20K to 24K cases.
